Step back into the 1930s in Arthurdale, West Virginia, the nation’s first New Deal Homestead Community, established in 1933. Now a National Historic District, Arthurdale features 160 original homesteads and the New Deal Homestead Museum, a multi-building site that includes a restored homestead, historic Center Hall, a forge, and the original federal administration building. Arthurdale offers guided tours year-round, with advance ticketing available, along with discounts for seniors, veterans, students, and children. Arthurdale is also a Museums for All partner, offering free admission for EBT cardholders and up to three guests.
Beyond the museum, visitors can explore the Arthurdale Craft Shop, featuring Appalachian crafts and gifts, or attend events and workshops throughout the year. Each July, the community hosts the New Deal Festival, a family-friendly celebration with artisan vendors, heritage demonstrations, children’s activities, hayrides, and more. Center Hall and the grounds are also available for weddings, reunions, and other special events.
