If so, we have an exciting and sweet initiative to share with you! Visit Mountaineer Country, in collaboration with the Mon County Beekeepers Association and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, is proud to introduce the “West Virginia Honey Trail.”

What is the Honey Trail?

The West Virginia Honey Trail is a one-of-a-kind initiative brought to you by Visit Mountaineer Country, the Mon County Beekeepers Association, and the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. This remarkable trail is all about celebrating the wonders of local honey and the incredible pollinators that make it all possible—our beloved bees! The initiative’s primary goal is to foster sustainability, community engagement, and the conservation of our precious pollinators.

Why You Should Embark

Indulge in Local Honey: Prepare your taste buds for a treat! Along the Honey Trail, you’ll have the chance to savor the finest and purest local honey that West Virginia has to offer. From luscious wildflower honey to rich and aromatic buckwheat honey, each stop promises a unique and delectable experience.

Explore Nature’s Treasures: The Honey Trail will lead you through stunning landscapes, picturesque farms, and charming small towns. Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of West Virginia as you journey from one honey to the next.

Connect with Local Businesses: Meet passionate beekeepers and supportive entrepreneurs who are committed to sustainability and community engagement. By visiting these businesses, you become a part of the Honey Trail family, contributing to the growth of the local economy.

Learn About Bees: Get ready to bee-come an expert! Along the trail, you’ll have the chance to learn about the fascinating world of bees, their role in the environment, and the efforts being made to protect them.

Begin Your Honey Trail Adventure

Starting your Honey Trail adventure is as simple as following these easy steps:

  1. Plan Your Route: Visit the Visit Mountaineer Country Trip Planner App in the bottom right-hand corner of every page to get started. You can also find a web version of the trail map here for easy access on the go!
  2. Pack Your Appetite: Bring an empty stomach and a willingness to try different types of honey. You’ll be amazed by the diverse flavors that await you!
  3. Be Curious and Explore: At each stop, take the time to talk to the beekeepers and business owners. Learn about their passion, their craft, and how they contribute to the Honey Trail mission by even just selling honey. Through your journey, you’ll find historical sites like Arthurdale, flower farms like Mayfield Farms, and so many other unique spots you wouldn’t expect to discover on this endeavor.
  4. Take Home Sweet Treats: Don’t forget to bring home some jars of local honey and other bee-related goodies to share with friends and family, spreading the sweetness even further!
  5. Share Photos and Videos: Snapping photos not only helps you create lasting memories to look back on, but it also gives us an opportunity to get a glimpse of your honey trail experience! Your photos and videos can foster a sense of community among fellow travelers and nature enthusiasts. This builds a virtual network of like-minded individuals who share a passion for sustainability, local honey, and the preservation of pollinators. Snap away! Outstanding Views

Canaan Valley has an abundance of sights that are a must-see. Canaan Valley holds some of the most photographed places in West Virginia, so it doesn’t matter if you are a professional or casual “Instagrammer,” you won’t want to leave your camera (or iPhone) at home.

Blackwater Falls State Park

Blackwater Falls is the most photographed waterfall in all of West Virginia, and there is no question as to why. This stunning waterfall cascades 57 feet and is open year-round with plenty of different lookouts to see these magnificent falls from all different angles.

Lindy Point is also located in Blackwater Falls State Park and gives more views of the park and valley. Lindy looks down on the Blackwater Canyon from over 3,000 feet and is just a short half-mile walk from the parking lot. This is the perfect spot to watch the sunrise and set over the Canaan Valley.

Elakala Falls is a conjunction of four waterfalls found inside the state park accessible by trail. A portion of the falls sits under a wooden bridge where you can view the falls cascading down and over rocks for 20 feet.

While there are many other lookout points in Blackwater Falls State park, these ones are sure to pique your interest and be the perfect addition to your adventure memory albums.

During the skiing off-season, the ski lift is open for guests to take rides to reach the top of the mountain to observe the abundant greenery in the summer or the crimson colors in the fall!

Outdoor Activities

Hiking & Biking

If mountain biking, trail riding, and hiking are your speed, there are plenty of locations for you to choose from in Canaan! One trail location is Canaan Valley State Park which is full of 18 miles of trails for you to hike or bike on. There is no shortage of beauty on these trails where you’ll find flourishing forests, wildlife, and meadows. If you are a first-time hiker or biker, there are guides available to accompany you on your adventure through the woodlands.

There are 22 miles of trail open for mountain biking, but street bikes can be taken on any roads that run through the refuge. As for hiking, there are a few more trails available to explore. If you are looking for a moderate walk or a challenge, you will find it within the 29 miles of trails.

One of the most extended stretches of biking trails is the Allegheny Highlands Rail Trail. While it is entirely in Canaan Valley, it does run through it for a few miles. If you are entering the trail in Parsons, you can take a 21-mile ride along the rail through paved and gravel trails down to the Elkins Depot Welcome Center. This trail is stocked with stunning woodlands and fields with other trailheads, maps, and parking along the way.

Blackwater Falls is not only filled with raging water and pristine forests but it also is embedded with trails for adventurous bikers and hikers. As far as paved trails go, Blackwater Canyon Rail Trail is a 10-mile stretch that starts in Thomas and runs through the Blackwater Canyon. You will be awed by the depth of the canyon and its historical features of coke ovens, which were used in the mining days to remove all of the impurities from the coal, and bridges that you will come across on your journey. In addition to paved trails, the state park features an array of mountain biking all with different difficulty levels for you to choose from. Blackwater Falls is open year-round for hikers to delve into the majestic beauty that is the falls in all seasons. The park has over 20 miles of trails to be discovered and is also open for some snow sports in the winter months.

Ohiopyle State Park: The Complete Visitors Guide

Ohiopyle is one of many gorgeous state parks in Pennsylvania. What makes Ohiopyle a phenomenal location for an outdoor getaway is that it is truly massive. Located only a short drive from the greater Morgantown area, over 20,000 acres of adventure await you and yours. Ohiopyle is an outdoor lover’s paradise with rafting, kayaking, climbing, hiking, biking, paddle boarding, and more! Ohiopyle boasts so many activities that it would be physically impossible to indulge in everything they have to offer you in less than a week. And while this can make planning your vacation overwhelming, this blog is here to help guide you through what Ohiopyle has to offer and help you plan your next trip to the gorgeous Laurel Highlands.

This to See

Cucumber Falls

One of the most photographed waterfalls in Ohiopyle, Cucumber Falls is a 30-foot waterfall that is as graceful as it is easy to access. Enjoy the waterfall as you relax in the basin or soak your feet in the water as it mists around you. Beyond the falls are several trails worth meandering through for a nice mid-day stroll.

Baughman Rock Overlook

The Baughman Rock Vista Overlook is truly a must-see attraction during your trip to Ohiopyle. Located right off State Road 26116, it’s only a short jaunt to an overlook that is breathtaking! Take caution, as the rocks are angled, and the drop-off is quite steep. This is the perfect spot to spice up your Instagram feed and wow your friends and family with this extraordinary landscape!

Ohiopyle Falls

Right next to the Ohiopyle Visitors’ Center is the 20-foot Ohiopyle Falls. These waterfalls are a mesmerizing sight, and the observation decks located by the visitors’ center are perfectly suited to gaze to your heart’s content. As you view the falls from one of three vantage points, also take in the dense, full treeline of Ferncliff Peninsula directly behind the falls.

Meadow Run

Have you ever ridden a natural waterslide? Chances are, you haven’t even seen one. Well, now’s your chance! Meadow Run is an area of Ohiopyle that boasts this incredibly rare recreational rock feature. Chiseled out of sandstone, this is a fast-moving, curving waterslide leading to a deep pool of water. There is a staircase leading back to the top of the waterslide, ensuring safe passage for riders of all ages. It is worth noting that, during the winter and spring months, the currents are likely too strong for most to attempt to slide, but summer and fall are usually ideal conditions to mark this off your bucket list!

Things to Do

Rafting

Ohiopyle’s main claim to fame is spectacular rafting. The very name Ohiopyle is derived from the Lenape Native American phrase “ahi opihəle,”“, meaning “white frothy water.”. Home to the fastest-flowing whitewater of the Youghiogheny River, you’re guaranteed an exhilarating experience. Ohiopyle has rapids from Class I (easy) to V (very difficult). Whether you’re a seasoned rafter or a complete newbie, Ohiopyle has a water adventure for you.

The Youghiogheny River

The Youghiogheny (Yoka-Gainy) River, sometimes called the Yough (Yohk) for short, is a tributary of the Monongahela and takes its name from a Lenape word meaning “stream flowing in a contrary direction.” The area was originally settled around 1,000 years ago by the Monongahela people. The area then saw purpose as hunting grounds for the Shawnee, Seneca, and Delaware tribes. A young upstart named George Washington even boated the Yough as a British Colonel, attempting to retake a fort in present-day Pittsburgh during the French and Indian War. For more information on the history of the Youghiogheny River and Ohiopyle, check out https://ohiopyle.co/pages/history.

The river itself is divided into three sections: the upper, middle, and lower Yough. The upper Yough is wild, consisting primarily of Class IV-V whitewater. The upper Yough is a wild stretch of water for adrenaline junkies and rafting aficionados. The middle Yough is a more approachable Class IIwhitewater– a great place to start your rafting journey or visit for a more mellow water adventure. The lower Yough is a great stretch for intermediate rafters or kayakers, consisting of Class III whitewater.

Kayaking

Beyond just rafting, the Yough also presents opportunities for some of the best kayaking around. Courses for learning the essentials of whitewater kayaking safety can be booked at Wilderness Voyageurs, which offers beginner to advanced whitewater kayaking courses. Book your kayaking course at https://wilderness-voyageurs.com/kayaking/.

Stand-Up Paddle Boarding

In the past decade, stand-up paddle boarding has become increasingly more popular. For the unfamiliar, this water activity involves standing on a large surfboard and using a long canoe paddle to propel yourself across the water. Paddle boarding is easy to pick up, and hard to put down! Ohiopyle is your destination to get in on the paddle-boarding craze. A variety of local outfitters offer paddle-boarding lessons and guided paddle board tours along the Yough as well as board rentals.

Hiking

Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail

This challenging 11.2-mile trail takes you from the heart of Ohiopyle to the small, nearby city of Bidwell. If you intend to hike the entirety of the trail, expect to be on foot for six hours! After a long day of sightseeing, return to the trailhead to find Falls City Pub and reward yourself with a pint.

Ferncliff Peninsula

If 11 miles is outside of your comfort zone, the Ferncliff Trail is a much more approachable two-mile loop around the Ferncliff Peninsula. You’ll encounter pristine waterfalls and dense greenery trailing along the Yough as it bends around the peninsula. This hike will only take you around 45 minutes, but the scenery makes it ideal for a mid-day picnic.

Sugarloaf Trail System

The Sugarloaf Trail begins near Sugarloaf Knob and extends almost five miles out, connecting many other trails included on this list to each other. The sugarloaf trail is a steep monster, so expect to see grades up to 18%, and several steep and rocky sections. This is not for the faint of heart or spirit, but it is an incredibly rewarding hike and a gateway to some of the best views in the entire park. If you’re looking to get ambitious, this is your trail.

Jonathan Run

The Jonathan Run trail is a 3.4-mile out-and-back hike alongside the  beautiful Jonathon Run Creek. This is an incredibly peaceful hike as the sounds of the shimmering creek and the brush of the trees are sure to remind you of the natural beauty of the outdoors. Hiking Jonathan Run is a great way to cap off a day of intense routes, or a phenomenal way to ease into your outdoor journey for the day.

Baughman Trail

Park at the Sugarloaf Sledding Hill parking lot and pick up the trail heading down the mountain alongside Sugarloaf road. Eventually, the trail will cross Sugarloaf road and continue on the opposite side, there are then mild uphills eventually arriving at the Baughman Rock Overlook. After resting at the overlook, you can head back the way you came.

McCune Trail

McCune Trail is a 3.7-mile looping trail, just a few hundred feet east of Sugarloaf Knob. This trail is very approachable, with minimal elevation gain. There is a gorgeous overlook present around one-and-a-half miles in, with a bench to stop and relax before you undertake the remaining two miles. A great hike for those looking to get into longer hikes but not comfortable with an uphill climb.

Guide to Thrifting and Antiquing in Mountaineer Country

Are you an avid thrifter? Or have you never stepped foot in a thrift shop? No matter your experience with thrifting, this guide will give you all the second-hand shops and thrifting information in Mountaineer Country.

What is Thrifting?

Thrifting is best explained as purchasing second-hand items, primarily clothing, for a lower price. It is often associated with well-known charitable organizations such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. However, thrifting covers a wider spectrum of items and hobbies, such as antiquing, vintage clothing, upcycling, and so much more. All these activities have one thing in common— they are previously owned. The opportunities to thrift are endless. From furniture and décor to books and electronics, there is a world of second-hand items waiting to be loved right here in Mountaineer Country.

""

Are Thrifted Items of Less Value?

Not always. Some items have been well preserved over the years or are good to new conditions, so their integrity is not lessened despite having a previous owner. Items’ value can decrease over time due to high quantity and low demand, while others increase due to low quantity and high demand.

""

Uptown Cheapskate

What Should I Expect?

Every thrift store offers a unique experience. However, at all traditional thrift stores, you can expect to find hidden treasures if you look hard enough. Thrifting can take time and determination to find quality items. Be prepared to diligently sift through every rack, dig through every bucket, and check the nooks and crannies–respectfully. Every store has amazing finds, it just takes effort. Some of the most common thrift store finds include vintage clothing, vinyl records, unique knick-knacks, kitchenware, accessories, linens, and furniture.

In more recent years, vintage stores have popped up across the country, blessing Mountaineer Country with a few of our own. Vintage stores save the time and effort of sifting through clothing; they have been handpicked by the owner, and collections have been curated to ensure every piece is authentic vintage and of high quality.

""

Gallery 304 Vintage Shop

Thrifting has also modernized to include online storefronts, mobile shops, and vintage-specific events. Facebook Marketplace, a feature on Facebook that allows users to discover, buy and sell items, is in and around Morgantown. From neighbors to strangers, you can find previously owned items in Mountaineer Country, all while sitting on your couch. One vintage store in Preston County has a van that travels to festivals, markets, and more. If you are looking for a bigger and more diverse selection, check out WV Vintage Fest or the Arts Walks. WV Vintage Fest is a recurring event held by Gallery 304 at altering locations. This growing event has over 30 vintage clothing vendors in one building, complete with food trucks. Main Street Morgantown hosts monthly Arts Walks in Downtown Morgantown from March-October. At this event, you can find vintage vendors and locally crafted goods! You can thrift without even going to the store!

""

Ramblin’ Van Vintage

Thrifting can provide a different experience based on the store. By visiting a few different types of thrift stores, you can find your preferences and which experience fits your needs most.

What Should I Look for?

You should look for what you currently need in your life, whether it is furniture, clothing, shoes, accessories, kitchenware, decorations, etc. It is essential to ensure the item is durable and will fulfill its needs. Some people prefer to look for brands they recognize when purchasing clothing, hoping to find good deals and quality items. Oftentimes, there are designer brands hiding on the racks or in the bins for a very discounted price.

If you are furnishing an apartment or house for the first time, a great place to start looking for furniture or kitchenware is thrift stores. There are also a few restorations thrift stores that specialize in restoring used furniture so it’s fully functional again. Whatever you decide to buy, be sure to inspect and clean it thoroughly before bringing it into your home and putting it to use.

First established by the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, this 335-acre park is now covered in wooded trails and campgrounds. Visitors can follow along the Alum Cave Trail loop for a picturesque view of the Middle Fork River. Audra State Park is open year-round, offering amenities and adventure, perfect for families and weekend explorers.

For an almost heavenly outdoor adventure, plan your visit to Audra State Park during the leaf-peeping season in the fall. Schedule your trip with our guide to the Top Spots for Leaf Peeping in Mountaineer Country.

Camping at Audra State Park

Visitors can stay overnight at any of the sixty-five campsites available at Audra State Park. Electricity hook-ups are available for select sites, so RV’s and campers are welcome with prior reservation. On-site amenities include two bathhouses, a public picnic area, drinking fountains, a playground, coin laundry, and a camp store. Audra State Park is also pet-friendly, with lots of room for four-legged friends to run off some extra energy.

Swimming

middle fork swimming in Audra State Park

Since opening, locals have come to Audra State Park to dip their toes in the Middle Fork River to escape the summer heat. The designated swimming area is centrally located in the park and is open to visitors throughout the day between April and October. The waters have been called the clearest in West Virginia and have attracted visitors from all over.

Sunbathers are welcome to stretch out along the flat rock beach or enjoy a meal under the nearby picnic tables and pavilion. One of two public bathhouses is located close to the swimming area, making it ideal for those looking to wash off after a day in the water.

Trails at Audra State Park

There are two main trails available to hikers and mountain bikers alike at Audra State Park. The Alum Cave Trail is a 2.7-mile loop around the northeastern portion of Audra State Park and is made up of two parts: the Upper Alum Cave Trail and the Lower Alum Cave Trail. The full loop is on relatively level ground, making it perfect for beginners and families.

However, natural foliage and slick rocks require hikers to take extra precautions and be wary of their footing while on the trail. In addition, the boardwalk portion of the Alum Cave Trail that takes hikers under the cave overhang is often made slick by the waters splashing up from below. Visitors with young children are encouraged not to run and to be mindful of the hand railings.

Another lesser-known hiking path is the Rock Cliff Trail, located just off the western entrance to the camping area. This small loop follows below a cliffside, taking hikers through a densely forested area. Botanists and nature enthusiasts alike will find many reasons to stop and appreciate the surroundings along this short trail, as Audra State Park is home to various plant and animal species.

Boating

Paddlers can find an easy put-in spot on the Middle Fork River located at the bridge in Audra State Park. This 2.9-mile whitewater run flows northward to connect with the Tygart Valley River and is rated a class III-IV difficulty during normal river conditions. Visitors are encouraged to check the river gauge located at Audra State Park before setting out on the waters.

Fishing

The Middle Fork River is home to multiple species of trout, bass, and bluegill. Fishing is permitted throughout the park, with access from the shoreline along the main Alum Cave Trail loop. All visitors looking to fish in Audra State Park must have an active West Virginia fishing license which can be obtained through the State Department of Natural Resources.

Valley Falls State Park: The Complete Visitors Guide

Valley Falls State Park is one of two West Virginia State Parks that follow the Tygart Valley River along the border of Marion and Taylor Counties. Located just south of Fairmont, WV, Valley Falls was originally the site of a lumber and grist mill community, who used the river’s current to power their machinery and support their infrastructure.

Valley Falls State Park gets its name from the four cascading waterfalls that follow along the natural bend of the Tygart River. Visitors can gawk at each set of falls from the riverside or by cautiously climbing atop one of the shoreline boulders and rock faces. Today, Valley Falls State Park is open to the public, offering scenic views across 1,145-acres.

Visitors looking to find more adventure along the Tygart Valley River can venture south to the Tygart Lake State Park.

Mountain Biking and Hiking Trails

Visitors can choose from any of the eight hiking trails that make up the Valley Falls State Park trail system. The trails vary in difficulty, providing both level paths for beginners and steep climbs for veteran explorers. Hikers looking for a day of adventure can easily follow a path that connects all of the trails, creating a 10-mile continuous loop. Click here to download a complete map of the trails for your next visit.

The trails are also open to mountain biking enthusiasts, offering ravines, long stretches of downhill paths, and switchbacks to keep you on your toes. The recommended route starts with the Rhododendron Trail, continues along each of the trails throughout the park, and finishes off at the Dogwood Connector Trail.

  • Deer Trail: Follow the Tygart River upstream as you head out along the Deer Trail. This 2.1-mile trail is a moderate mix of level ground and steep incline, making it the perfect warm-up for any hike.
  • Dogwood Trail: This 0.8-mile trail along the northernmost ridge of Valley Falls is an uphill climb that pays off in the end. Hike past scenic views and find easy access to several other trails throughout the park along this difficult trail.
  • Red Cardinal Trail: Hop on the Red Cardinal trail from the Dogwood Trail, Wild Turkey Trail, or Deer Trail for an easy 1-mile trail that’s downhill all the way back to the park entrance.
  • Red Fox Trail: Watch your step when heading down the steep grade of the 0.35-mile trail. Acting as a connector between the Dogwood Trail and the Deer Trail, the Red Fox Trail intersects with the main road before heading into winding switchbacks down the hillside.
  • Rocky Trail: Take a steep detour into the forest along this 1.8-mile trail. Connecting two sections of the Rhododendron Trail, as well as the Wild Turkey and Red Cardinal Trail, the Rocky Trail can easily be added to your trail route for extra difficulty.
  • Rhododendron Trail: This 1.9-mile trail follows alongside the Tygart River, first taking hikers past the picturesque waterfalls before entering a moderate climb into the northern portion of the park.
  • Tygart Valley (River) Trail: Get an up-close view of the waterfalls that Valley Falls State Park is named for by hiking this moderate 0.2-mile trail. Relatively level, this trail is easy to access from the parking lot.
  • Wild Turkey Trail: Make your way to the peak of Valley Falls State Park by hiking the upper ridge along the Wild Turkey Trail. Steep inclines at both the beginning and end make this 1.8-mile trail quite physically demanding.

Fishing

Anglers can cast their line from along the shores of Valley Falls State Park. Carry down access to the Tygart River can also be found at Camp Towles, just a short drive south of Valley Falls State Park. This warm water area is home to large and smallmouth bass, as well as walleye, carp, catfish, and more. Stop by McFly Outdoors to stock up on gear and lures before your next trip out to Valley Falls.

For Families

Families looking for a laid-back day by the river can visit the playground, located just a short walk away from the day parking. The picnic area and pavilion offer a shaded reprieve for visitors looking to escape the sun and hikers coming back in from the trails.

The walk from the picnic area to the Falls takes visitors briefly over the tracks of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, an active railroad system that carries sight-seers through the hills of West Virginia. Finally, families can find landmarks of the original grist mill throughout the park, offering historical accounts of the community that once stood on the banks of Valley Falls.

Kayaking

Kayakers and paddlers alike are invited to test the waters of the Tygart Valley River that run through Valley Falls State Park. Fast currents and rocky falls make each section of the Valley Falls to Hammond kayaking route a challenge. Rated a class II-IV in difficulty, this 3.4-mile route features three drops: the Valley Falls (class rating IV), the Hamburger Helper (class rating IV+), and the Twist and Shout Takeout.

Thrill-seeking visitors are encouraged to observe the following ground rules with planning their trip to Valley Falls State Park. First, stop by Colfax, WV, to check that the river gage reads below 4.7 ft—this is the level recommended for visitors’ safety. Second, stop by the superintendent’s office located at the put-in location to sign in before you attempt the route. Finally, be mindful to observe designated put in and take out points on river right and to avoid hiking back to your car on river left.

Don Knotts: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know

A Century of Entertainment

From his “nervous man” to Barney Fife to Ralph Furley and beyond, Don Knotts was
Morgantown’s gift to American comedy.

The Early Life of Don Knotts

Before he was ‘Don Knotts’—Emmy Award-winning actor and TV personality— he was Jesse Donald Knotts, born on July 21, 1924 in Morgantown, WV. Knotts grew up in the heart of Mountaineer Country, living in the boarding home owned and operated by his mother, and later attending Morgantown High School. Knotts would then go on to enlist in the Army and serve during World World II.

Returning to Morgantown after the war, Don Knotts would go on to earn his Bachelor’s degree in Education from West Virginia University in 1948. Knotts also earned a Minor in Speech and maintained a very active campus life as a member of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and Alpha Psi Omega Honor Society. The history of Don Knotts is felt everywhere throughout Morgantown; from Don Knotts Boulevard, named in 1998, to the Don Knotts Statue, unveiled on High Street in 2016 after a 10-year fundraising effort by the town.

The Don Knotts Statue

Don Knotts Statue

There are two things that help non-West Virginian’s understand the importance of Morgantown; one is West Virginia University, and the other is Don Knotts. So after the announcement of Don Knott’s death in 2006, the community of Morgantown began a fundraising effort to erect a statue of Don Knotts outside the front entrance of the Metropolitan Theatre in the heart of downtown. This status was designed by local artist Jamie Lester, also a West Virginia native, and was unveiled in 2016. It is a permanent art installment and an official stop in the Morgantown Public Art Guide.

Some of Don Knott’s Notable Acting Roles Include:

Frequently Asked Questions:

What was Don Knotts net worth?

At the time of his death, Don Knotts’s net worth was estimated to have been more than $20 Million.

Why did Don Knotts Leave the Andy Griffith Show?

Don Knotts was convinced that Andy would not let the Andy Griffith show continue on past five seasons. To prepare for this, Knotts began looking into a career in feature films, starting with “The Ghost and Mr. Chicken.” When the show continued on for three more seasons, Knotts decided not to rejoin the Mayberry cast.

What was Don Knott’s Cause of Death?

Don Knotts developed lung cancer in November of 2005 and later died from respiratory complications related to pneumonia.

How Did Don Knotts Become Famous?

While in high school, Don Knotts picked up ventriloquism and began practicing as a comedian. He continued his acts during his time in the Army, touring the Western Pacific Islands with a group called “Stars and Gripes.” After the war, Don Knotts attended WVU, performing stand-up comedy at local clubs and appearing as a guest ‘character’ on a radio Western called “Bobby Benson and the B-Bar-B Riders.”

Don Knott’s break into fame is credited to two performances: his appearance on the soap opera “Search for Tomorrow” between 1953 and 1955, and his role on Steve Allen’s Variety show in 1956.

What were Don Knotts Last Words?

Always a performer, Don Knotts is said to have been cracking jokes and telling stories, even on his death bed. While his final words were not recorded, Knott’s Daughter, Karen Knotts, recalls having to leave the room to laugh out loud.

Long-time friend and co-star Andy Griffith was also at Knott’s bedside during his final moments. Griffith gave Knotts words of encouragement, saying “Jess (Don’s real name), breathe. You’ve gotta make this, you’ve gotta pull through. Breathe.” Griffith believes that his words got through to his friend as Knott’s shoulders began to move more purposefully.

Where is Don Knotts Buried?

Don Knotts is buried at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles, CA.

On his grave is a plaque that features depictions of Knotts in a few of his more famous roles. The bottom of this plaque reads, “he saw the poignancy in people’s pride and pain and turned it into something hilarious and endearing.”

Monongahela River: Everything You Ever Wanted To Know

History of the Mon River

Where did the Monongahela River Form?

The Monongahela River forms at the junction of Tygart Valley River and West Fork Rivers in Marion County, WV. The river flows northward towards Pittsburgh for a total of 128.7 miles. There it joins with the Alleghany River to eventually form the Ohio River.

How The Monongahela River was Named

The name “Monongahela” comes from the Unami language and roughly translates to “Falling Banks.” The name was given to the river as a reference to its high banks that erode easily and are loose and muddy in some areas. However, the Monongahela River is also known locally as “The Mon” or “The Mon River” and will often be referenced this way by local residents.

Interesting Facts About The Mon

  3. Thanks to the locks and dams being operated by the US Army Corp of Engineers, the Monongahela River became the first river in the United States with complete navigational control.

Cheat Lake: The Complete Visitors Guide

About Cheat Lake

Cheat Lake back waters
Cheat Lake is a 1,730-acre man-made reservoir located in the northern part of Monongalia County, about 10 miles east of downtown Morgantown and West Virginia University’s Main Campus.

Some areas of the lake are a perfect getaway with calm and shady waters where you can drop your anchor, turn on the radio, and crack open a cool drink. These areas are known by the locals as “the backwaters” and are the spots for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and fishing. Other parts of the lake cater to more adventurous spirits. Power-boaters, inner-tubers, jet skiers and water skiers can be found along the main drag of Cheat Lake.

For an almost heavenly outdoor adventure, plan your visit to Cheat Lake during leaf peeping season in the fall. Schedule your trip with our guide to the Top Spots for Leaf Peeping in Mountaineer Country.

Water Activities on Cheat Lake

Swimming

Swimming is available for families and boaters alike at multiple locations along Cheat Lake. Walk right up to the water from Cheat Lake Park or Sunset Beach, or drop-anchor and dive right in when boating on the lake. Visitors should note that there is no lifeguard on duty for Cheat Lake and that personal safety precautions are encouraged.

Kayaking and Canoeing

The calm, steady waters of Cheat Lake are surrounded by forested hillsides and picturesque banks. Cast-off from Ice’s Ferry Bridge and float northward with the current until you reach Cheat Lake Park for an easy day out on the water. Kayak and canoe rentals are available at Sunset Beach Marina, along with select retailers in Mountaineer Country.

Fishing

Thanks to local fisheries and conservation efforts, Cheat Lake is home to several species of bass, walleye, catfish, pike, and trout. Fishermen can steer their boat into the calm backwaters of Cheat Lake for early morning fishing, or cast from the pier along the Cheat Lake Trail. For more information on the type of fishing you can enjoy, click here.

Public and paid launch sites are available to visitors looking to get their boat out onto the waters of Cheat Lake. The launch sites at Edgewater Marina are paid but offer additional services such as gasoline refueling, supplies, and first-come-first-served boat-slip rentals. Free launch sites at Sunset Beach Marina and Cheat Lake Park are open to the public and offer smaller ramps for walk-up or drive-up watercraft.

  • Summer weekends on Cheat Lake get busy. Choose when and where you go based on the crowd. Be mindful of boat traffic and make sure you know how to fully operate your vehicle.
  • Account for how long you will be on the water. Make sure you have enough gas and motor oil to get you through the day. (You can purchase both at Sunset Beach Marina and Edgewater Marina.)
  • Leave the lake better than how you found it. Take out your own trash if you accumulate any.
  • Know the difference between public and private property. Be mindful that you do not trespass.

Access Points

Whatever your pace, Cheat Lake is the place. The following are the four public access points to Cheat Lake so you can get in on the fun.

The History of Coopers Rock

Some say Coopers Rock State Forest received its name after a fugitive hid from the law around the spot that is now known as the infamous overlook. As a cooper by trade, the fugitive made barrels at his newly found hideout and sold to people in nearby communities. Others say the name came from the cliffs capping the mountain above Cheat River Gorge. No matter how the story goes, today, Coopers Rock stands out for many of its historical facts–some still visible throughout the forest. In fact, as you’re hiking, you may run into the 30-foot-high, pyramid-shaped furnace, the Henry Clay Iron Furnace. The furnace was built between 1834 and 1836, and was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1970.

Both campgrounds are available to the public: April 1 through December 15.

Coopers Rock Hiking Trails

A father carrying their child on their back while walking through the woods

You never know what you may discover on one of the many Coopers Rock hiking trails. In fact, Coopers Rock State Park has 21 different trails (which are just a few of the area’s best hiking trails) ranging from easy to moderate and steep covering nearly 50 miles of the forest.

Nature’s beauty is everywhere throughout the park! One of the more popular trails, Henry Clay Iron Furnace Trail, takes you on a trip back in time where you’ll discover the 180+ year-old structure. Whether you choose an easy hike around the reservoir, or you want additional photo ops at a more moderate hiking trail to Ravens Rock, there is something to fit everyone’s hiking style.

Download the map of Coopers Rock hiking trails before your visit, so you can plan out the best trail to take for you and your family.

Rock Climbing and Bouldering

A man rock climbing

As soon as locals hear of rock climbing and bouldering, many often think of Coopers Rock!

Unlike traditional rock climbing, bouldering is done on paths less than 20-feet high and does not involve ropes or harnesses; however, most climbers will use climbing shoes for bouldering to help improve their grip.

As two of the most popular pastimes at the forest, visitors can embark on guided rock climbing and rappelling activities for all levels. Individuals can climb year-round, but fall is the best season for these activities.

Zip Lining

A quick drive across the bridge from Coopers Rock, you will journey through the forest of Chestnut Ridge Park and Campground and find the Adventure WV Outdoor Education Center, which is home to the West Virginia University Zip-Line Canopy Tour.

The canopy tour is comprised of three zip lines, an aerial bridge, and a tandem rappel station to exit the course. Each zip ranges in length from the 201’ starting zip, to the 750’ zip at the conclusion of the course. At the end of the tour, individuals will rappel 45’ from the final platform to the ground and hike back to the equipment shed on an interpretive nature trail (approximately 10 minutes on a moderate trail).

This canopy tour is great for ziplining pros, as well as beginners. Individuals will also learn fun facts about the forest as they zip from one course to the next so it’s both fun and educational!

Water Activities near Coopers Rock

Many parts of Coopers Rock State forest overlooks the canyon section of the Cheat River. The main stem of the Cheat River includes 36 miles of class I water, which has been established as a river trail. If you’re a water sports enthusiast, then you should know the river awaits you for fishing, canoeing, kayaking, swimming and, at the Cheat River Narrows, whitewater rafting–a class II-II+ section during the summer, but can reach high water levels (Class III).

7 Most Instagrammable Spots In Greater Morgantown

Morgantown, WV is home to one of the top tailgating colleges–West Virginia University, a haven for local shoppers–the Morgantown Farmers Market, and nature’s beauty–Cheat Lake. As visitors and residents alike know, there is always something to do. In West Virginia, there are some beautiful sights to see, and Instagram is a great way to share those sights. Here are the 7 most instagrammable spots in Morgantown, WV.

Cheat Lake

""

A 13-mile long reservoir, Cheat Lake has three marinas, hiking trails and places to rent boats, kayaks, canoes, paddle boards and more. Depending on the time of year, the view may be different as the leaves change, but with trees and miles of water, this is a place to snap a breathtaking panoramic image. Head out on the water with your phone in a water-safe bag and take pics while you kayak, or take a walk along the Cheat Lake trail for some panoramas.

Glade Farms Campground

If you’re looking for picturesque streams with water cascading over rocks, trees that seem to almost form archways and fall leaves for miles, head to the Glade Farms Campground for a night – or even just the day – to get those insta-worthy images you’ve been longing for within nature.

Caperton Trail

""

Six miles of paved surfaces means you can snap a photo while rollerblading or skateboarding, or you can hold an impromptu photo shoot in the archway entrance to the trail. Tree-lined and along the waterfront, you’re sure to get some great shots along this trail.

West Virginia Botanic Garden

""

The botanic garden has several trails where you can take photos of various plants, flowers and herbs, as well as historic structures from the old Tibbs Run Reservoir. These make a great addition to any Instagram feed!

Dorsey’s Knob Park

""

At sunset, climbing to the top of Sky Rock gives great views of the colors as the sun goes down over the Morgantown area. The views of the surrounding areas can be taken any time of day, though, so be sure to add this one to your Instagram snapshot list.

Coopers Rock Overlook

At the Coopers Rock State Forest, you can hike to a drop above the mile-wide gorge, giving sunset views and, in the fall, shots of the red, yellow and orange leaves as they change colors. The river can also be seen from this overlook.

Appalachian Gallery

""

Considered one of the most beautiful stores in town, the Appalachian Gallery has jewelry, hand-blown glass, pottery, books and more created by local West Virginian artists. In addition to the unique items you’ll find inside, the outside of the store shows some of the town’s past in a historic building.

Morgantown is full of unique, beautiful spots to stop and take a photo. The WVU campus also offers some great spaces for grams. So snap some pics, share them with your followers and tag them so the world can see these instagrammable spots in Morgantown.
