Oktoberfest in Mountaineer Country

Upcoming traditional German Fests!

Experience Oktoberfest like a true German; ladies grab your dirndl skirt and men, your lederhosen! The dirndl is dress of southern Germany, specifically Bavaria. The word drindl comes from the full German word “Drindlgewand,” meaning “Maid’s Dress.” It consists of a bodice, blouse, full skirt and apron. Lederhosen are German for “leather breeches or pants.”

Formerly, lederhosen were worn for physical work, as they were more durable than fabric garments. Today, they are the workingman’s leisurewear.

The following local events are reminiscent of Oktoberfest held annually in Munich, Bavaria, Germany. The 16-day folk festival takes place in the last week of September through the first week of October. This historical event has been an important part of Bavarian culture since its inception in 1810. Traditional Oktoberfest food includes: sausages with mustard and sauerkraut, soft pretzels, potato salad, apple strudel and honey dumplings.

Immerse yourself in the German traditions at one of these Mountaineer Country events:
