Mountaineer Chapter of National Audubon Fall 2019 Program

November 12, 2019 at 7:00 pm

All fall programs are free and open to the public – everyone is welcome! Programs will be held at 7pm at the Spruce Street United Methodist Church in downtown Morgantown, near the Morgantown Farmers Market pavilion. Enter through the back of the church.

Speaker: Dr. Derek Courtney
Topic: “Winter Waterfowl”

About the program: More than 30 species of waterbirds regularly pass through the Morgantown area every winter. Cheat Lake and our surrounding rivers provide some of the best viewing opportunities in the state to see these wonderful visitors. The presentation will introduce the audience to the regular species that we can expect to see each year, and provide some tips on identifying and appreciating them. This talk will also be a good precursor to Mountaineer Audubon’s annual winter waterfowl field
trip around the Cheat Lake area.

About the speaker:
Derek Courtney, MD, has been birding for a little more than a decade. He is a state and continental lister who appreciates a good chase just as much as a stroll through his local patch. He is a frequent field trip leader for Mountaineer Audubon and currently serves as Chairperson of the WV Bird Records Committee. His favorite time of year to bird around Morgantown is winter, when the waterfowl arrive to brighten the shortened days.
