ACQUIRE: An exhibition that shares collections and those who collect
ACQUIRE: An exhibition that shares collections and those who collect.
On display NOW until September 24th at Nutting Gallery in the WVU Erickson Alumni Center. Please visit the Alumni Center website for hours of operation. www.ericksonalumnicenter.com
There are many phycological studies and articles devoted to why people collect. Many major museums, facilities, and institutions hold collections of all kinds within their permanent collection. You can even watch a TED Talk on why humans collect.
In the end, many of these explorations narrow it down to a few key thoughts citing knowledge and learning, personal pleasure (including appreciation of beauty and pride of ownership), and finally, relaxation and stress reduction.
So, what do you call a collector? Well, what do they collect? There is a myriad of names applied to those who collect. A few of those titles are an arctophile, a person who collects teddy bears, an audiophile, is a person who has a great interest in high-fidelity sound reproduction, a brolliologist, collects umbrellas, a deltiologist collects picture postcards, and the list goes on and on . . .
The collections shown here, vintage fashion plates, clowns, vintage hats, kaleidoscopes, coal mining stickers, PEZ dispensers, rubber duckies, antique porcelain doll holds, quilts, vintage handbags, and troll dolls, all belong to local individuals who wanted to share their collections collectively.
SPECIAL THANKS to ACGM Creative Network members: Morgantown Art Party & Chancy Glance for assistance with the curation and installation of this exhibition.
